Urban Patio Forest
Amidst the seemingly endless activity and traffic of Los
Angeles, I wanted to create an are that would feel like
a forest in an apartment building. The challenge - the
only space to work with was a small second floor deck.
The limited space and lack of soil provided a fun
opportunity to get creative.
Southern California natives were
specifically selected for their acclimation to the
drought prone area, which I knew would work well with
all the plants being in pots and drying often. Further,
passionfruit vines were trellised along the apartment
exit to frame the windows from the inside and out,
creating a feeling of stepping into another world.
Additionally, a custom railing desk, bar chair, and rug
were added to allow the space to be livable. Lighting
was added to the base of the pots.
